RelevanceWith more than 300 million human biological samples currently in storage throughout the United States, the value of human biological materials in medical research is unquestioned. Researchers’ ability to now understand diseases at the molecular level by studying gene mutations as well as variations in the DNA of individual genes and their protein products requires biological samples of the highest quality. The research value of these biological samples increases exponentially with the quantity and quality of the information associated with the sample. By linking biological samples collected, processed and stored under conditions that meet or exceed industry standards for quality and protection of participant privacy, to extensive retrospective and prospective clinical, demographic and epidemiologic information, the Fairbanks Institute’s platform will have maximum scientific value for discovery research.
